What should you do with that old medicine cabinet that makes your bathroom look so…, well, dated?  Sure, you could get rid of it, but you would lose storage space (not exactly the best design solution).  Oh, and you would make a royal mess in the process, by the way!  Instead, why not turn it into artwork?  I did this a while back during a bathroom renovation I did for a client.  Here’s how:

Tools and materials needed:

  • Screwdriver
  • Electric Saw
  • Miter Saw
  • Measuring Tape
  • Birch or Poplar Wood
  • Wood Moulding
  • Screws
  • Paint
  • Strong Glue That Bonds Paper and Wood
  • Artwork
  • (Note: Try to reuse existing door hinges if possible)

Instructions:

1. The first step is to unscrew the hinges and remove the cabinet door. NOTE: You can skip this part if you don’t mind the current door style   (This one was dated and blah, so I opted for a new door)

2. Build (or purchase) and install a new cabinet door.  If you have the right skills and tools, you can make your own (or have your significant other do it for you) using birch or poplar wood, or you  can purchase one already made.  If you make your own, you can select a decorative moulding you like to frame your door.  I decided to make a new door (actually, I had my carpenter make it) and selected a moulding that was proportionate to the size of the door.

3. Paint the medicine cabinet and door.  I used Benjamin Moore Espresso Bean in a satin finish for this one, which matches the  color of the vanity cabinets below and the frame I installed  around the mirror next to it.  But you can select a color of your choice that works with the design of your bathroom.

4. Glue artwork on the cabinet door.  Select a piece of artwork you like, size it and glue it on the door.

So there you have it!  You turned your old medicine cabinet into artwork without losing valuable storage space.  It’s a win-win.  (Bonus = No one will ever know your Q-tips and deodorant are hiding behind that beautiful picture)
