Media Room with a Houston, Texas History Theme

by Edith Barrera González

This has been such an exciting project for us at Edith Barrera Interiors, LLC!  We’ve had the joy of designing a space for a client who happened to have two awesome artwork pieces, one with a mighty buffalo and one with an old historic map of Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas.  As an interior designer, I’m always looking for ways to create a colorful design that looks and FEELS personal.  So I first surveyed the space and took inventory of the artwork.  When I came across the two pieces that the owner loved most, I just KNEW at that moment what the theme would be!  Buffalo Bayou is an important landmark of Houston’s rich history, and having been raised in Houston, Texas myself, I also had an instant connection with the theme.  The colors, the textures, the fabrics, the custom window shades and draperies, and the many other design elements in the space were born from that design inspiration and vision.  The project is in its last phase, with just a few finishing touches missing, but the design vision I had for the space has certainly already come to life!  (Design and Custom Window Coverings by Edith Barrera Interiors, LLC, Houston, Texas)

Included in the images are the two artwork pieces that form part of the owner’s collection.  The main source of inspiration was the mighty buffalo (what we’ve been calling him).  The other artwork piece that absolutely grounded the theme was the old historic map of Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas.  Both pieces were some of the owner’s favorites, so I definitely wanted to showcase them in the space.  We decided that the mighty buffalo would be front and center in the room, so we placed him on the wall between the two custom roman shades we would hang next.  And there he stands today, making the most robust presence and focal point in the room.

The design of the draperies that set the perfect background behind the sofa includes an earthy warm gray color and brushed gold metal grommets, and they are hung on a forged iron decorative rod in a brushed gold finish.  The grommets just made a lot of sense, since it’s a bachelor space, and we wanted to keep a masculine look and feel.

Our Family Team of Creatives

Included are photos of our family team of Creatives.  (I’m behind the camera, capturing all the fun!)  Lucy and Sergio Barrera are seen working together the day we installed the custom draperies we designed and made in our studio.  We are blessed to be able to work together as a family to make our clients’ interior design dreams come true.  We each play a vital role in the design process, and we value each other’s contribution to the success of every design we breathe life into.  We LOVE what we do!  Can you tell?

Personalized Interior Design

A successful interior design should be about you.  The design should make an emotional connection between you and your space.  As an interior designer, that is first and foremost in every design vision I conceive.  From artwork to colors, fabrics, patterns, textures, everything that forms the design, I want to make sure you see yourself in your space, that there are bits and pieces of your story that welcome you and your loved ones each time you walk into the most intimate place in your life, your home.
