A great way to make your space feel more personal is by choosing the right colors.  And I don’t mean just walls, either, so don’t run off to the paint store just yet!  There are several ways to add color to a space besides painting the walls, and I’ll give you some fabulous ideas in future blog posts.  But before we jump into where you’ll splash the color in your space, let’s talk a little about how color affects us all differently and how your choice of color should have a purpose.

Not everyone sees or experiences color the same way

Our eyes are all different, so everyone will see, feel or react to a color differently.  This is fine, because you’re designing your space to feel personal, so focus on how a color makes YOU feel. Of course, you may have to have your loved ones weigh in on your choices if they’ll be sharing the space with you, but try to make your final choice as personal as possible.

Consider your cultural associations with color

Different colors mean different things to different cultures.  Some Western cultures associate red with passion, energy, love and excitement; while in some Asian cultures, red is the color of joy and happiness.  So consider what it means to YOU as it relates to your cultural beliefs and background, since these associations will contribute to how you feel and react to certain colors.

Colors can evoke memories

I love this aspect of color! Think of a fond memory. It may be that family vacation trip you took to the West Coast when you were 5 years old. Remember the feelings of excitement and happiness that filled your heart!  Now think of the colors you associate with that trip.  Remember the beach, the beautiful blue waters, the color of sand, of seashells.  This memory may be your inspiration for the colors you’ll want to start thinking about for your space.

Think about the purpose of the space

Think about what you’ll be using the room for.  Is it a kitchen?  There’s a reason restaurants use colors like red, orange and yellow (think McDonald’s), as these colors stimulate your appetite.  Fast food chains gravitate toward brighter shades of these colors, while those that favor a more formal setting opt for darker shades. These colors have a purpose.  Either they want guests to come in, order their Big Mac, fries and Coke, before they eat and leave quickly; or they want them to come in, relax, order a glass of Cabernet, followed by the special of the day, then some Tiramisu and a hot cup of cappuccino or more wine (Oh, yes, especially more wine).  So be aware of what your personal purpose is for the space, and choose colors accordingly.

Create a mood that feels personal

Think of what mood or emotion you want to create in the space, and choose colors that will create this effect. If you want to create a rich, luxurious feel and romantic mood in your bedroom, you’ll want to stick to rich, deep colors.

These are just some thoughts you’ll want to bounce around before you choose colors. They’ll help you get started in creating that personal connection you long for in your space.
