Some memories can last a lifetime. And when they’re fond memories, you want them to! So why not let those cherished memories be your inspiration when designing your space? Too often I see people desperately searching for inspiration in home interior magazines, online images and home furniture stores. But if you want your space to feel personal, you might consider going down memory lane instead.

Go Retro

Is there a particular time era that brings to mind fond memories? Use it as your design inspiration, and go retro! It doesn’t even have to be an era you lived in, either. It can just be an era that you have a special emotional attachment to. I’ll give you an example. Just the other day I was visiting a friend who just moved into a new place. We were discussing how things that bring to mind fond memories can create a warm, peaceful and personal space. We then started noticing that many of her furniture pieces had something in common. They were all inspired by a vintage 50’s theme. But she wasn’t even born in that era! I asked her why she favored that look, and when she thought about it, she said that it reminded her of her mother, who had passed away when she was much younger. She hadn’t thought about it before, but her love of home furnishings from that time period was emotionally tied to the dear memory of her mother. By surrounding herself with these things, she somehow kept that cherished memory alive in her mind and in her heart. What a beautiful way to make her space feel personal!

Include Artwork from Your Travels

Personalizing Interiors: Use artwork from your travels to keep fun memories alive

Personalize your interiors with artwork from your travels

When you travel, especially for fun and/or with someone dear to you, you create awesome memories. That’s why you always pack a camera! But why not pick up some artwork during your travels, too? Artwork can capture those beautiful memories and help you personalize your space back home. Let these pieces tell your story and infuse the space with the joys of your favorite travels, with the excitement of the many great moments you’ve lived and fascinating places you’ve visited!

Use Fabrics That Bring Back Fond Memories

Think of a favorite fabric that brings back a beautiful memory. Maybe linen brings to mind memories of a fresh ocean breeze from your honeymoon vacation. Use it in your space, and keep the memory alive! Hang some linen draperies, or reupholster a chair. Get a linen coverlet made for your bed, or some decorative linen throw pillows. One of my personal favorite fabrics is velvet. It takes me back to when I was 12 years old when my mother bought a beautiful gold velvet sofa. I remember the day it was delivered to our home; we were all so excited for her! I always include velvet somewhere in my interiors. It wouldn’t feel like home without it.

Your home is your sanctuary, so surround yourself with beautiful moments, cherished memories – not just things. Let your fondest memories be your inspiration when designing your space. There’s nothing more peaceful, soul satisfying and deeply personal than coming home at the end of a long day to a space that reminds you of the many moments that make life worthwhile.
